“Have you ever stood on ground that once echoed with the chaos of battle? Today we’re in Brightwood. It is a neighborhood in Northwest Washington D.C.
Brightwood’s story stretches back to 1756. Back then it was known as White Mill Seat. Over time it transformed. It became Peter’s Mill Seat. Then, it was called Crystal Springs. Imagine the pure water flowing from those springs. People came here to enjoy the chestnut trees and family time.
Around 1860, the area was named Brighton. However a name change was needed. Postal conflicts with Brighton, Maryland caused confusion. Sometime after 1879, it became Brightwood.
Brightwood earned a unique place in history. It became the site of the only Civil War battle within Washington D.C. President Abraham Lincoln himself witnessed the fighting here. The neighborhood got its final name from its location. It is nestled near Rock Creek Park among gingko, chestnut, oak, and cedar trees.
Brightwood sits in Upper Northwest D.C. Georgia Avenue divides it in half. Sixteenth Street runs along its western edge. Aspen Street marks its northern boundary. Fifth Street defines the eastern border. Missouri Avenue lies to the south. Rock Creek Park forms its western edge.
In Brightwood today you will see brick colonials with detached garages. These homes line quiet, tree-lined streets. The eastern part features single-family homes and attached townhomes.
Brightwood is experiencing a culinary rise. You will find diverse restaurants here. The Taste of Brightwood celebrates this culinary scene annually.
The Parks at Walter Reed is transforming the former Walter Reed Medical Campus. This redevelopment will bring new life to the area. It includes mixed-use spaces and historic building renovations.
Brightwood has a fascinating transportation history. Before 1889, transportation relied on a horse-drawn cart. An African American man named Cherry drove it. In 1899, the Brightwood Railway Company introduced a streetcar line. But this streetcar was notoriously unreliable. Passengers often had to push it back onto the tracks. Some residents nicknamed it the G.O.P. Get Out and Push line.
The Brightwood Citizens’ Association formed in 1891. Their initial goal was better transportation. James L. Norris was the first president.
Emory M.E. Church played a significant role. It was built in 1832. In 1861, the original building was torn down for Union Army fortifications. A stone church was built in 1870. The current building dates to 1921.
Brightwood is also home to Fort Stevens. The Union Army built it during the Civil War. Confederate soldiers attacked it in 1864. The Union soldiers successfully defended the fort.
Brightwood was once home to Brightwood Trotting Park. People came here to watch races and enjoy picnics. The course closed in 1909.
Moreland’s Tavern was a popular spot. It later became the Brightwood Club House.
In 1909, Emile Berliner made the first successful helicopter flight in the U.S. in Brightwood.
Brightwood has a high immigrant population. It has large Ethiopian and Salvadoran communities.
