Hidden within the folds of the Triestine Karst, a whisper of mystery awaits. The Abisso dei Cristalli, a chasm in the earth, beckons with tales of chilling air and crystalline wonders. This cave, cataloged as 3960 VG, holds a unique enigma. Unlike most caves in the area, the Abisso dei Cristalli exhales a constant breath of air. It flows outwards, defying the usual ebb and flow driven by barometric pressure, flooding, or seasonal temperature shifts. This peculiarity puzzled explorers like Silvio Polli and Giuliano Zanini, who noticed the absence of the expected summer air inversion. The Abisso dei Cristalli sits near a large doline and the Grotta dell’Alce. The latter is a complex labyrinth of caverns, galleries, and shafts, with two entrances situated slightly lower than the Abisso dei Cristalli’s opening. Early explorations involved smoke tests in the Grotta dell’Alce, hoping to find a connection. However, the tests proved inconclusive at first. Later, forced ventilation experiments unveiled a partial link between the two caves via the “Ramo dei tre amigos”. This passage, however, only accounts for a fraction of the airflow from the Abisso dei Cristalli. This suggests the presence of another air source, perhaps at greater depths. The mystery deepened when, during a Timavo flood, the airflow in both the Abisso dei Cristalli and the nearby 12 VG cave (also known for its constant inward airflow) ceased for three days. This cessation pointed towards a deep connection between the Abisso dei Cristalli and its unknown air source. The air within Grotta dell’Alce, with its consistent 8 degrees Celsius measured at the base of its entrance shaft during summer, acts as a cold air trap. This could explain the lack of summer air inversion in the Abisso dei Cristalli. Further exploration of Grotta dell’Alce, using forced ventilation from the Abisso dei Cristalli, pinpointed the air’s entry point at the bottom of the cave’s largest shaft. The Abisso dei Cristalli is more than just an airflow enigma. Originally a small fissure, just 10 by 40 centimeters, it was expanded in 1953 by the GTE speleological group, revealing a series of chambers. These chambers, increasing in size, lead to a complex main shaft that descends to a depth of 205 meters, reaching a mere 7 meters above sea level. During heavy Timavo floods, the cave’s bottom fills with water, rising several meters. The name “Abisso dei Cristalli” (Abyss of Crystals) comes from the large calcite crystals that once adorned the walls of the second chamber. These crystals are a testament to the cave’s rich mineral history. Today, the cave is a site of ongoing exploration, with the mystery of its persistent airflow still not fully solved.
