Is this a glimpse into the future? Devil’s Cataract, the westernmost cascade of Victoria Falls, holds a fascinating secret. The indigenous Tonga people call it “Boaruka,” meaning “divider of waters.” Devil’s Cataract is where the Zambezi River reveals its power. The river has carved a 10-meter-deep gash into the hard basalt at this point. As erosion continues, more and more water will be funneled through this channel, eventually pulling away from the main falls. Scientists believe that Devil’s Cataract will eventually cut back into weaker rock, potentially separating it from the rest of the falls.
