Ever wondered what it feels like to step back into the golden age of opera? The Prague State Opera offers just that. Built in 1888 the Prague State Opera has a rich and fascinating history. Originally, it was known as the New German Theatre. The German speaking opera companies in Prague wanted their own space. Before its construction, they shared the Estates Theatre with Czech companies.
In 1883, the German Theatre Association began planning for a new theater. The renowned Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer created the designs. Karl Hasenauer, architect of Vienna’s Burgtheater also contributed. Prague architect Alfons Wertmüller managed the construction. Private collections funded this grand project. The Prague State Opera opened on January 5 1888. The opening performance was Wagner’s opera The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Angelo Neumann became the first director. He brought in talented musicians. The theater quickly gained international recognition.

During the 1930s, the theater became a refuge for artists fleeing Nazi Germany. The New German Theatre was a bastion of democracy. However, financial problems forced its closure in September 1938. During the Nazi occupation, it was renamed the German Opera House. It was used for Nazi Party events.
After the war, in May 1945 Czech artists founded the Theatre of the Fifth of May. For the first time, the theater was dedicated to Czech opera. Bedřich Smetana’s Brandenburgers in Bohemia was the first performance. In 1949, the theater was renamed the Smetana Theatre. It became a second house for the National Theatre.
After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the theater regained its independence. On April 1 1992, the Prague State Opera was established. The opera house began to celebrate the traditions of the New German Theatre. The Prague State Opera is near Wenceslas Square. It is a short walk from the Old Town Square. The season runs from September to June. Today, the Prague State Opera continues to offer world-class performances. It stages operas and ballets by famous composers. Verdi. Tchaikovsky. Puccini.
