In 1850 Michael Gannon bought 1905 acres. This land included what is now Hurstville. Thirty years later a small church was built. It was St Michael’s Catholic Church Hurstville. This humble building served as both a church and a schoolhouse. The Sisters of Charity taught there. Archbishop Moran laid the foundation stones in 1885. He blessed the church and the convent the following October.
