Let’s step back in time. Imagine Warsaw in the 1920s. Poland had just regained independence. A large part of the population was illiterate. Ignacy Daszyński and other Polish Socialist Party leaders recognized a pressing need. They established the Towarzystwo Uniwersytetu Robotniczego or TUR. Its mission was simple yet profound. TUR would bring education culture and recreation to the working class.
The Zjazd Towarzystwa Uniwersytetów Robotniczych played a vital role. TUR organized various educational activities. These included courses lectures and libraries. They also had artistic groups and theaters. The organization aimed to raise social awareness. It promoted socialist and pro-independence values.
One key part of TUR was its focus on young people. In April 1923 TUR created the Central Youth Department. Its job was to organize youth circles. By November 1925 TUR recognized the need for a separate youth organization. The plaque commemorates the event that followed.
On January 31 and February 2 1926 the First Congress of Youth Circles took place. It led to the creation of Organizacja Młodzieży Towarzystwa Uniwersytetu Robotniczego. It is also known as OM TUR. This youth wing became a force. It had over 120 circles in 85 locations by the mid-1930s. Nearly 8000 members were part of it.
OM TUR’s activities ranged from cultural events to sports. They instilled socialist values in young workers. OM TUR even had its own publications like “Głos Młodzieży Robotniczej”.

In 2001 TUR was reactivated in Poznań. The organization continues its mission today. It is focused on education and culture.
