Right here stands a stone monument. It commemorates Willy Brandt. This monument and park are in Bubeneč. The park was renamed Willy Brandt Park. The unveiling was on October 6, 2011. City officials attended. German embassy members were there too. Peter Brandt was present. He is Willy Brandt’s son.
Jiří Kubík created the monument. He is a stonemason and sculptor. The monument uses gabro rock. It features Brandt’s signature. A new street sign was also revealed. A street memorial plaque was unveiled too.
Willy Brandt was important. He lived from 1913 to 1992. He was a member of the Bundestag from 1949 to 1957. He was West Berlin’s mayor from 1957 to 1966. Brandt chaired the SPD from 1964 to 1987.
Brandt became Foreign Minister in 1966. He was Chancellor from 1969 to 1974. He sought better relations with Eastern European countries. This aimed to ease tensions in Europe. It also aimed to reorganize divided Berlin. This was called Ostpolitik. Diplomatic relations began between Czechoslovakia and West Germany in 1973. This was part of Ostpolitik.
The monument includes inscriptions. One says: WILLY BRANDT / CHANCELLOR / FEDERAL / REPUBLIC / GERMANY / NOBEL PEACE PRIZE / WINNER.
Another plaque states: WILLY BRANDT / (12/18/1913 – 10/8/1992) / CHANCELLOR OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY IN 1969–1974 / FROM THE SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GERMANY. He worked to improve West Germany’s relations with Eastern European countries. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971. This Willy Brandt monument stands as a reminder of his work. It honors his dedication to peace and understanding. It symbolizes improved relations between Germany and Eastern Europe.
