Beneath the stoic gaze of the Former Imperial Guard Headquarters, a silent story unfolds. The Former Imperial Guard Headquarters, completed in 1910, stands as a testament to a bygone era. This imposing red brick structure, designed by army engineer Tamura Yasushi, once pulsed with the strategic heartbeat of Japan’s Imperial Guard. Its walls, seemingly impervious to time, witnessed the meticulous planning and disciplined movements of an elite military force. Originally situated in the heart of the Kitanomaru district, the Former Imperial Guard Headquarters has miraculously survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the ravages of World War II, standing in near-perfect condition. Its Gothic-inspired architecture, featuring a distinctive octagonal tower at the central entrance and a slate roof, sets it apart. While many other Western-style brick government buildings from the Meiji era have vanished, the Former Imperial Guard Headquarters remains. It serves as a poignant reminder of a period of significant transformation in Japan’s history. Following World War II, the building served briefly as staff quarters for the Imperial Household Police. However, after 1963, it stood vacant, facing potential demolition in 1966 to make way for redevelopment of the Kitanomaru district. Fortunately, a preservation campaign, spearheaded by architect Taniguchi Yoshiro, saved this architectural gem from destruction. Its historical and architectural significance was recognized in 1972 when it was designated a National Important Cultural Property. The subsequent renovation, also led by Taniguchi, saw the addition of a reinforced concrete structure within the building and the restoration of the roof to its original slate. From 1977 to 2020, a portion of the Former Imperial Guard Headquarters housed the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Crafts Gallery. While currently closed to the public, the exterior remains visible, allowing visitors to admire its enduring presence. As you stand before the Former Imperial Guard Headquarters, imagine the echoes of history within its walls. From military strategizing to artistic displays, this building has borne witness to a dynamic chapter in Tokyo’s story.
