This pier isn’t just a place to admire the scenery. Tai Miu Wan Public Pier provides access to the historic Tin Hau Temple. The temple is just in front of the Tai Miu Wan Public Pier. Tai Miu means Great Temple. The Cantonese name Tai Miu Wan means “the bay of large temple”.

Built in 1266, the Tin Hau Temple is Hong Kong’s oldest and largest. It is also said to be the most popular Tin Hau temple both for fishermen and for others in Hong Kong. For centuries, worshippers have arrived by sea.

In fact, the pier was opened in early 1983. Before that, it was under construction. An aerial photo taken in October 1982 shows it in progress. Every year during Tin Hau Festival, many people arrive at Tai Miu Wan Public Pier. New World First Ferry operates a special ferry service from North Point. This service runs for two days. It runs the day before and the day of the Tin Hau Festival.

At the end of Tai Miu Wan Public Pier stands the Tai Miu Wan Tide Gauge Station. This essential piece of equipment helps monitor sea levels.

Remember the Tin Hau Temple when you’re here at Tai Miu Wan Public Pier. Take a moment to appreciate its history. The temple was managed by the Lam clan until 1939. Since them, it has been managed by the Chinese Temples Committee. The temple was declared a monument on October 20, 2023.

Today, the Tai Miu Wan Public Pier continues to serve visitors. It is a gateway to history, culture, and stunning sea views.
