The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory stands as a testament to international scientific cooperation. It’s more than just a building. It represents a global effort to understand our planet. In 1899, the International Geodetic Association established a network of observatories. Their goal was to measure the Earth’s wobble. Gaithersburg was chosen as one of the sites. It shared a latitude of 39° 8′ N with observatories in California, Italy, Japan and Russia.
Edwin Smith designed the Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory. He was the Chief of the Instrument Division of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Smith had previously conducted similar measurements from his home in Rockville. The building itself is a unique structure. Its roof could be pulled apart. This exposed the telescope to the night sky. Slatted exterior walls stabilized the inside air. White paint minimized heat retention. These features ensured accurate observations.
Inside, a pyramidal concrete pier supported the Zenith telescope. This instrument was key to measuring the positions of stars. Scientists tracked these stars to calculate the Earth’s wobble. Nightly observations occurred here until 1982. Advances in computer technology and satellite observations made it obsolete.
The Gaithersburg Latitude Observatory operated almost continuously. There was only a brief closure from 1915 to 1932. This closure happened due to economic measures.
