In 1887, a pivotal moment unfolded in the life of a young Washingtonian named Oran W. Young. He embraced his faith, setting in motion a journey that would eventually lead him to First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church. First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith and community service. It pulsates with a rich history. The church, nestled just a mile north of the United States Capitol, has become an integral part of the Washington, D.C. fabric. It actively addresses both spiritual and social needs within its community through a diverse array of ministries. First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church’s mission resonates with its motto, “Changing Lives on Purpose.” This commitment reflects the church’s deep-seated belief in faith as a guiding principle, echoing the words of 2 Corinthians 5:7, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Reverend Oran W. Young, a native Washingtonian, now leads First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church. His roots trace back to North and South Carolina through his parents. Educated in D.C., he graduated from Wilson High School and the University of the District of Columbia. He then furthered his theological education at Howard University School of Divinity, earning a Master of Divinity in 2005. Reverend Young’s journey of service began at Israel Baptist Church under the guidance of Reverend Dr. Morris L. Shearin. He held various roles, including leading the Evangelism Ministry and serving as Treasurer and Associate Minister. His experience broadened with a stint as Assistant to the Pastor at New Redeemer Baptist Church in 2009. Today, at First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church, he leads a dedicated team including Deacon Harold Gilliard, Chairman of the Board of Deacons, and Trustee Gary Moore, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. They are supported by a dedicated group of Associate Ministers. First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub where faith fuels action, serving as a testament to its commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of its congregants and the broader community.
