The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine has a rich history. It was established in 1972. The school ensures a steady supply of physician leaders. These leaders serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Public Health Service.

After World War II military facilities struggled to retain medical specialists. Congressman F. Edward Hébert led the charge. He campaigned for a military medical school after the war. Another key figure was Durward G Hall MD. He was a representative from Missouri. Hall is also considered a founder.

President Nixon ended the draft in 1970. This further increased the physician shortage. Congress acted and the school was chartered. The Bethesda campus was purchased near Washington D.C. The first class started in 1976.

Initially there were just 29 students. Now the school admits around 171 students per class. Graduates become officers in their respective services. They commit to seven years of active duty.

The F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine faced closure threats in the 1980s. Some thought the school was too expensive. However the school demonstrated its value. Over 100 graduates served in Operation Desert Storm.

The mission is clear. It is learning to care for those in harm’s way. The school has trained over 5000 medical doctors. They specialize in military medicine. Thousands of paramedical professionals have also graduated.

The curriculum emphasizes military medicine. Students also participate in clinical rotations. These rotations take place at military installations worldwide. About 25% of active-duty military doctors are graduates.

The campus spans 100 acres in Bethesda. It is located near the National Institutes of Health. The location allows access to major resources.
