Originally known as the Stadion am Dallenberg, the AKON ARENA is more than just a sports venue. It is a place where memories are made. It is a place where the community comes together.
The AKON ARENA’s story began in 1967. The Wuerzburger Kickers needed a new home. Julius Bacher and Josef Metzger spearheaded the effort. They secured funding through donations. They also got help from the city, the state of Bavaria, and the federal government. Members even pitched in with labor.
Jupp Schunk was the architect. Balthasar Hohn oversaw construction. The AKON ARENA officially opened on August 15, 1967. The Wuerzburger Kickers played a friendly against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
Over the years, the AKON ARENA has seen many changes. In 2006, it hosted the Ghana national team for training during the World Cup. A new lawn was especially laid.
For a time, the stadium was known as the Flyeralarm Arena. This was from 2013 to 2023. In March 2023, Akon became the new namesake. AKON ARENA is now the official name.
The AKON ARENA boasts a capacity of 13090. There are 2882 seats. Over 10000 are standing places. The main grandstand is fully covered.
Interestingly, some of the seats came from other stadiums. These include Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Kaiserslautern. Some also came from the Brose Arena in Bamberg.
The AKON ARENA has seen record crowds. On November 7, 2016, 13080 fans watched the Wuerzburger Kickers play FC St. Pauli.
The stadium features modern amenities. There is under-soil heating. There are also floodlights for evening games since 2014. A restaurant offers views of the field. A VIP area caters to sponsors and guests.
Getting here is easy. The AKON ARENA is accessible by car and public transportation. Tram lines 3 and 5 run directly from the main train station. About 800 free parking spaces are available.
The AKON ARENA is more than bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of Wuerzburg’s sporting spirit. The AKON ARENA continues to evolve. It stands ready to host future generations of fans and athletes.
