Opened in 1912 with just nine students, Magee Secondary School has witnessed Vancouver’s history unfold. It stands as a testament to the city’s growth and its commitment to education. Magee Secondary School initially occupied a modest room in the Eburne Superior School in Marpole. Imagine the humble beginnings, a far cry from the modern structure we see today. In 1913, the school relocated to its current location on 49th Avenue and Maple Street. Magee Secondary School became a central hub for Point Grey, serving students from Marpole to Shaughnessy and Dunbar. During the 1918 influenza epidemic, Magee Secondary School temporarily transformed into a hospital, showcasing its role in the community beyond education. The school expanded over the years, reflecting the growing population. A gymnasium was added in 1921, followed by a west wing in 1922. In 1939, a significant expansion added ten rooms, including a new gymnasium, workshops, classrooms, and an auditorium. The current Magee Secondary School building, a modern structure, opened in 2000. The school’s motto, “Esse Quam Videri” which means “To be, rather than to seem to be,” reflects its focus on substance over appearance. Magee Secondary School boasts a strong fine arts program with over 500 students participating in band, choir, strings, and even a symphony orchestra. Students tour internationally every two years, showcasing their talents on a global stage. The school also offers the SPARTS program. This program caters to students engaged in high-performance athletics or arts, allowing them to balance their rigorous training schedules with their academic pursuits. Today, Magee Secondary School continues its tradition of excellence. It offers a diverse range of programs, a dedicated staff, and a vibrant student body. It stands as a symbol of Vancouver’s commitment to education and its rich history.
