Lost in time no more. Welcome to a journey through the captivating history of Saint Dominic Catholic Church in Washington D.C. This church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community.

Saint Dominic Church has deep roots. Its story began long before its official founding in 1852. The land beneath Saint Dominic Church has been linked to Catholic families since 1735. Ann Rozier Carroll a relative of Charles Carroll once owned the land. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

In 1853 the Dominicans purchased the parcel from Georgetown College. They paid 5055 dollars. Until the church was built the Dominicans found a temporary home. They stayed with George Mattingly. Mass was celebrated at his residence. Judge Robert E. Mattingly George’s grandfather recalled people standing in the street. They would kneel during Mass spilling out into the street.

Saint Dominic Church was officially founded in 1852. Reverend George A.J. Wilson organized it. It opened on March 19 1854. The church was located in an area known as The Island. A canal once ran where Constitution Avenue is today. It connected the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.

As the congregation expanded a larger sanctuary became necessary. On June 13 1875 Archbishop James Roosevelt Bayley dedicated the new church. He was the Archbishop of Baltimore.

After President James A. Garfield was shot in 1881 Saint Dominic’s joined other churches. They offered prayers for the president. Reverend Father Rochford gave a sermon. He denounced the assassination. He prayed for the president’s recovery.

Tragedy struck on March 12 1885. A fire destroyed the church’s interior. The fire started in the boiler room. It quickly spread engulfing the altar. The church engineer Mr. Florence McCauliff and housekeeper Miss Kate Duffy rushed in. Officer Burns from the nearby station house joined them. They saved valuable items from the altar. Officer Burns suffered serious burns.

Despite the devastation the community rallied. Catholics and non-Catholics joined to raise funds. They rebuilt the church quickly.

The 20th century brought more challenges. Southwest Washington’s population declined. The Federal government declared the area blighted. Urban renewal began displacing families.

In 1945 Congress established the D.C. Redevelopment Land Agency. More than 4000 families were displaced. Homes in Southwest Washington were demolished. The construction of Interstate I-395 razed the Saint Dominic Priory School and Convent.

Lyndon B. Johnson also visited Saint Dominic’s. He would pray and reflect with the friars. Though he was instructed he never formally entered the Church.

Today Saint Dominic Church thrives. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. Stained glass windows tell stories. They feature St. Dominic and Dominican saints. They remind us of the church’s rich history.

The church bell cast in 1898 still rings. It calls people to worship. Saint Martin de Porres a Dominican saint is honored with a shrine. The National Rosary Shrine of Saint Jude also resides here.

Saint Dominic Church is more than a building. It embodies faith community and history. Its story reminds us of resilience in the face of adversity. Its doors remain open. It welcomes all who seek solace inspiration and connection. Saint Dominic Church stands as a beacon of hope. It shows the power of faith. It highlights the strength of community.
