Beneath the verdant slopes of Lamma Island, the Sok Kwu Wan Sewage Treatment Plant hums with quiet purpose. It’s a far cry from the bustling seafood restaurants and vibrant energy of Sok Kwu Wan Village, a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Yet, this unassuming facility plays a crucial role in preserving the beauty and health of Picnic Bay. Sok Kwu Wan, once plagued by worsening water quality due to untreated waste from village houses, restaurants, and fish farms, faced a critical challenge. The bay’s poor natural circulation exacerbated the pollution, culminating in devastating red tides in 1999 that decimated the fish in the local culture zone. The Sok Kwu Wan Sewage Treatment Plant emerged as a vital solution. Initially envisioned as a preliminary treatment facility discharging through a long outfall, the project evolved. The final design, completed in 2015 at a cost of $365.1 million, incorporated a full secondary treatment process, including nitrogen removal and disinfection. The plant now treats sewage from approximately 1300 residents, 6000 daily visitors, and the many restaurants in the Sok Kwu Wan area. It even handles sewage flows from nearby Lo So Shing and Mo Tat Wan. The treated effluent is then discharged through a 765-meter submarine outfall near the mouth of Picnic Bay, minimizing the impact on the sensitive fish culture zone and Mo Tat Wan beach. The Sok Kwu Wan Sewage Treatment Plant stands as a testament to the commitment to environmental protection. The plant utilizes a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) system, chosen for its effectiveness and suitability for the remote location. This advanced technology ensures a high level of treatment. The plant’s construction also incorporated innovative methods like Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) for the near-shore portion of the outfall pipeline, minimizing disturbance to the delicate marine ecosystem and the nearby fish culture zone. The Sok Kwu Wan Sewage Treatment Plant might not be the most glamorous stop on your Lamma Island adventure. But it embodies a crucial narrative of environmental responsibility and the ongoing efforts to balance human activity with the preservation of this beautiful corner of Hong Kong.
