A church steeped in history stands before you. This is Trinity Bible Church in Washington DC. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but humble beginnings. In 1887 Reverend James C Dorsey a former Episcopal missionary invited neighbors to his home for services. Attendance soared. Services moved to various homes then to Birch Hall near the old Takoma Park railroad station and later Union Chapel.

Through the generosity of Mrs L S Thornton land was acquired. Takoma Parish a church was built opening on November 26 1893. Interestingly the altar cross alms basin chalice paten and ciborium came from a demolished church in Northwest Washington DC. This wasn’t just any church though. It was a testament to community spirit and perseverance.

In 1895 the District of Columbia and nearby Maryland counties formed the Diocese of Washington. Takoma Parish became independent as Takoma Parish. Reverend George H Johnson became Trinity’s first rector. In 1941 the Diocese renamed it Trinity Parish.

The old church was replaced. A building campaign in 1936 led to groundbreaking on June 14 1936. The new Trinity Church opened on March 7 1937. A unique tradition the Joash Service helped pay off the $16000 debt by 1943. The remaining $500 bought a war bond starting a Parish Hall Building Fund. The Rectory was finished in 1941.

The 1960s brought social changes. Trinity’s congregation shifted from mostly white to its current mainly African American makeup. Under its current Rector Trinity expanded ministries. These included a House Church Advent Circle an annual Preaching Mission and Revival. A children’s program TEAMM flourished. The church also served the homeless with street feeding programs and Christmas dinners.

Today Trinity Bible Church welcomes everyone. It’s a vibrant diverse community reflecting many cultures. It’s a place of faith service and a rich history a legacy built on humble beginnings and unwavering dedication. Trinity Bible Church isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to faith’s enduring power.
