Stepping onto Emmett Avenue, let’s unravel the story of York Humber High School. This isn’t just a school. It’s a testament to resilience, transformation, and a commitment to building futures. York Humber High School first opened its doors in 1967 on Humber Blvd. The original building showcased a distinct brutalist architectural style. Imagine the halls filled with the energy of a new generation. By 1988, York Humber was a vibrant community of nearly 500 students. Then, a significant change was on the horizon. In 1989, the school temporarily relocated. Students attended classes at Frank Oke Secondary School and a warehouse on Alliance Avenue. This was a temporary measure. A new, modern building was being constructed on Emmett Road. This new chapter began in 1992 in a building designed by Nowski Partners Architects. The old Humber Blvd. location was reborn as Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School. York Humber High School, now settled on Emmett Road, continued its mission. The school’s motto, “Factum Prosperitas” meaning “Build the Future”, reflects its focus on vocational training. York Humber High School offers a range of programs designed to equip students with practical skills. These include Green Industries, Food Services, Cosmetology, Auto Shop, and Carpentry. Through cooperative education opportunities, students gain valuable experience. York Humber emphasizes not just technical skills but also essential literacy and numeracy skills. This prepares students for success in their chosen careers. In 2017, the school celebrated a significant milestone: its 50th anniversary. This was a testament to its enduring presence in the community and its commitment to education. York Humber High School is more than just bricks and mortar.
