Hidden within Radeberg, the Zwölfeckhaus stands as a unique testament to architectural innovation in the former East Germany. The Zwölfeckhaus, or “Twelve-Corner House,” was the brainchild of architect Manfred Zumpe. He envisioned a new type of prefabricated residential building. Zumpe aimed to offer efficiently usable floor plans and unique design possibilities, a departure from the typical Plattenbauten (concrete slab buildings) common in the DDR. This first Zwölfeckhaus in Radeberg, completed in 1983, is one of seven such buildings erected in the Rödertal area. These five-story structures, with their distinctive twelve exterior corners and triangular and quadrilateral loggias, offer approximately 50 one- to five-room apartments. The Zwölfeckhaus also boasts a central staircase, a feature that adds to its unconventional design. One of the three Zwölfeckhäuser in Radeberg underwent a significant renovation in 2011, ensuring its continued place in the cityscape. Interestingly, one of these buildings served as a filming location for the 1985 crime film “Traum des Vergessens” (Dream of Forgetting) from the “Polizeiruf 110” series. Originally, the top-floor apartments were less desirable due to their uncovered balconies, offering less protection from sun and rain. However, as of 2023, all seven Zwölfeckhäuser now feature covered balconies on the fifth floor. The three Zwölfeckhäuser in nearby Arnsdorf even earned nicknames from residents: “Working House,” “Celebrating House,” and “Special House,” reflecting the community spirit and individual character of these unique dwellings. The Zwölfeckhaus in Radeberg, with its innovative design and rich history, offers a glimpse into a distinct chapter of East German architecture.
