Hidden beneath bushes and shrubs for years, the Quosdorf-Gedenkstein Obelisk has reemerged. This week, at the corner of Zur Neuen Brücke and Bahnhofsplatz, the Quosdorf-Gedenkstein stands tall once more. The Klotzscher Verein has brought this piece of Klotzsche history back into the light. The Quosdorf-Gedenkstein Obelisk was originally erected in 1896. It was a tribute to Friedrich August Quosdorf by the Verschönerungsverein (Beautification Society). Quosdorf was the founder of Königswald, a section of Klotzsche. He also built the first Kurhotel (spa hotel) in the area. The rediscovery revealed not just the obelisk itself. A surrounding border of sandstone and metal decorations also came to light. These elements will soon undergo professional cleaning. The inscription on the Quosdorf-Gedenkstein will also be refreshed. The gilding process, however, requires warmer temperatures. It likely won’t happen until next year, along with the replanting of the surrounding area. While we wait for warmer weather, research continues into Quosdorf’s life. The Klotzscher Verein hopes to connect with any descendants who might have documents or photographs to share, further illuminating the story of this remarkable man and the Quosdorf-Gedenkstein Obelisk.
