“Craving a glimpse of paradise?” Prepare to be mesmerized by Zuroloma birding. Here, on the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano, nature unveils its breathtaking artistry. Zuroloma Reserve is a sanctuary for biodiversity. It stands as a testament to conservation efforts in the Andean Choco, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Imagine this high Andean montane forest. It is unlike any other place in the world. The views are heart-stopping, especially early on a clear, sunny day. You will see evergreen lush Andean cloud forests and snow-capped volcanoes. The air is crisp and clean.

Zuroloma, also known as “Bamboo Hill,” sits at 3200 meters. It is near the Yanacocha Reserve. The reserve is about 90 minutes from Quito, via a secondary gravel road. It is a mix of Temperate Neotropical Cloud Forest and Inter-andean Vegetation.

Zuroloma Reserve is a haven for bird lovers. It is a world-renowned location. The reserve offers incredible bird photography opportunities. Rainbows of sparkling hummingbirds will capture your attention. Keep your eyes peeled for elusive species.

Here at Zuroloma, you might spot the rare Chestnut-napped Antpitta. You could also see the Rufous Antpitta. The incomparable Sword-billed Hummingbird is another possibility. The Sapphire-vented Puffleg and Blue-capped Tanager also call this place home. Overall, 171 registered bird species reside here.

The Antpitta show is a must-see. It starts around 8 am and lasts until about 10 am daily. Two main Antpittas steal the show. These are the Equatorial Antpitta and the Chestnut-naped Antpitta.

Explore Zuroloma’s three main trails. Discover hummingbird feeders along the way. Take in the views of Guagua Pichincha Volcano. Other species to watch for include the White-throated Screech Owl.

Frequent bird species include the Andean Guan. You might see the Tyrian Metaltail or the Buff-winged Starfrontlet. Maybe you’ll spot the Andean Pygmy Owl or the Ocellated Tapaculo. The White-browed Spinetail and Barred Fruiteater are also possibilities. Keep an eye out for the Crowned Chat-tyrant and Yellow-breasted Brushfinch. You could see the Black-crested Warbler or Russet-crowned Warbler. Look for the Yellow-bellied Chat-tyrant or Rufous-breasted Chat-tyrant. The Blue-backed Conebill and Tufted Tit-tyrant also live here. Don’t forget the Yellow-billed Cacique.

Zuroloma provides a sustainable income for the local community. Your visit supports their valuable conservation work. These efforts resist agricultural conversion. They also fight other forms of habitat degradation.

Ecoruta paseo del Quinde, the old Nono/Mindo road, is stunning. Every twist and turn reveals breathtaking vistas. You will gain a proper sense of the Andes’ majesty.

Remember Anderson’s story of locking his keys in the car? He had all his luggage and passport inside. Luckily, a local showed him how to break in without damage. This resourcefulness is common in Ecuador.

Zuroloma birding offers more than just sightings. It provides an immersive experience. The beauty, the birds, and the conservation efforts create a lasting memory. So breathe deep, open your eyes, and let Zuroloma’s magic unfold.
