Have you ever felt the warmth of a “loma abrigada”? Welcome to Conocoto a parish nestled in the southeastern part of Quito. It’s a place steeped in history a place where the echoes of ancient cultures mingle with the vibrant energy of modern life.

Conocoto’s story begins long ago. Evidence suggests people lived here over 12000 years ago. The Cara people settled here between 550 and 1140 AD. Later the Panzaleo culture flourished here. Finally the Inca Empire ruled until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century. Imagine the layers of history beneath your feet.

After Quito’s official founding in 1534 smaller villages sprang up nearby. Conocoto was one of them. However its official recognition as a parish didn’t come until much later 1725 and 1861. Around 1560 the parish began taking shape. Its design was simple 5 streets running north to south 7 running east to west. Picture early settlers building their lives here. The initial population was around 700.

The name Conocoto itself is fascinating. It comes from the Quichua words “Cunug” meaning sheltered and “Cutu” meaning hill. So Conocoto translates to sheltered hill. Or “Sitio caliente” warm place in Quechua. Locals pronounce it CONONCOTOG hence Conocoto. The nickname “Conocoto Tieso” stiff Conocoto has three interesting origin stories. One is about a volleyball game another about a drunken celebration. The most popular story involves a woman named Juana Pinto. She stopped buses from ignoring Conocoto’s needs. She shouted “De aquí no pasan. Tieso Conocoto!” From here they don’t pass. Stiff Conocoto. The buses had to comply.

Today Conocoto boasts a vibrant market. Its location is the result of a conflict. After a dispute with bus drivers from Sangolqui Juana Pinto brought in merchants from Quito. This makeshift market grew into the bustling Mercado Municipal de Conocoto we see today.

Conocoto offers more than just history. It’s a place for a day trip. The climate is pleasant with dry and wet seasons. The Basílica San Pedro de Conocoto built in 1922 under the supervision of German architect Pedro Bruning is a must-see. La Moya Park is another landmark. The food is amazing. You can savor traditional Ecuadorian dishes. Conocoto is famous throughout Quito for its salchipapas.

Conocoto’s charm lies in its blend of past and present. Its small businesses including hardware stores bakeries and furniture workshops add to its unique character. Supermarkets also serve the residents. This is Conocoto a parish with a rich history and a bright future. Enjoy the day in this little piece of Ecuadorian history.
