Cobblestones, once the very definition of Zuqaq Al Blat, whispered secrets under the hooves of horses and the sandals of passersby. Zuqaq Al Blat, meaning “the cobbled alley,” earned its name in the 19th century. Imagine Beirut in the 1800s, a walled port city bursting at the seams. Wealthy residents sought refuge from the crowded city, building villas on the slopes of Ashrafieh, Qnatari, and Musaytbeh. The city expanded beyond its walls. Enter Ibrahim Pasha’s troops in 1832, occupying Beirut. The Egyptians, keen on urban planning, began to modernize the city. Governor Mahmoud Na’ami Bey ordered the streets to be cobbled. This included a crucial road leading from the city walls up to the Qantari hill. This newly paved street became known as Zuqaq Al Blat, giving the entire quarter its name. The area, however, goes by another name: “al-Batrakieh,” meaning “the Patriarchate”. This reflects the presence of the Greek Catholic Patriarchate of Beirut within Zuqaq Al Blat. This blend of names reveals the layered history of this fascinating area. Zuqaq Al Blat isn’t just about cobblestones and patriarchs. The quarter has a vibrant mix of cultures. In 2014, the registered voters were 90% Muslim and 9% Christian, further illustrating the diversity of this Beirut neighborhood. Famous figures have graced Zuqaq Al Blat with their presence. From the renowned singer Fairuz to writer Abd el-Qader Qabbani and scholar Butrus Bustani, Zuqaq Al Blat has been a home and inspiration to many. Even Charles de Gaulle, the iconic French leader, spent time in this historic quarter. Zuqaq Al Blat stands as a testament to Beirut’s rich and evolving history. A place where cobblestones whisper tales of the past, and where the echoes of diverse cultures continue to resonate.
