“Imagine the echoes of history resonating within these walls.” That’s how I’d describe Qasr al-Hariri. This palace stands as a testament to Lebanon’s intricate past. The story of Qasr al-Hariri is deeply intertwined with the life and legacy of Rafic Hariri. He was a prominent Lebanese businessman and politician.

Rafic Hariri served as Prime Minister of Lebanon for two terms. He was in office from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2000 to 2004. Hariri played a vital role in reconstructing Beirut after the Lebanese Civil War. He was widely credited for his role in the Taif Agreement. This agreement ended the 15-year Lebanese Civil War.

Now let’s talk about Rafic Hariri’s early life. He was born in Sidon in 1944 to a modest Sunni Muslim family. In 1965, he ventured to Saudi Arabia to work. He initially taught there briefly. He then transitioned to the construction industry.

His business acumen led him to establish Ciconest in 1969. It was a small subcontracting firm. Later he partnered with the French construction firm Oger. This collaboration led to the creation of Saudi Oger. It became a major construction firm for the Saudi Royal family.

Having amassed considerable wealth, Hariri embarked on philanthropic endeavors. These included building educational facilities in Lebanon. His first initiative was the Islamic Association for Culture and Education. It was founded in 1979 and later renamed the Hariri Foundation.

Hariri’s political career gained momentum in the early 1990s. He played a significant role in the 1990 Taif Agreement. This agreement ended Lebanon’s sixteen-year civil war. In 1992, he became the first post-civil war prime minister of Lebanon.

As prime minister, Hariri implemented aggressive economic policies. He launched “Horizon 2000”. It was a rejuvenation plan focused on reconstructing Lebanon. Solidere, a privately-owned construction company, played a key role in this initiative. It focused on redeveloping Beirut’s downtown area.

Tragically, Rafic Hariri’s life was cut short on 14 February 2005. He was assassinated in a suicide truck bomb explosion in Beirut. The assassination was a catalyst for political change in Lebanon. Massive protests known as the Cedar Revolution led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops.

In the aftermath of his death, Beirut International Airport was renamed Rafic Hariri International Airport. His son Saad Hariri succeeded him as leader of the Future Party.

Qasr al-Hariri stands as a symbol of Rafic Hariri’s enduring influence on Lebanon. It reflects his efforts to rebuild the nation and promote education. As you stand before Qasr al-Hariri remember the man who dreamed of a better future for Lebanon.
