Deep within the earth, water flowed. This water, from the Zauckerode shafts, needed an escape. Thus, in 1800, the Tiefer Weißeritzstolln was born. This tunnel, its mouth marked by two large crossed swords, lies near Zum Steiger. Zum Steiger, once a simple tool shed for the stolln’s construction, evolved. It became the Steiger’s home, then an inn. The innkeeper, Obersteiger Halm, purchased the land. He built the Gasthaus zum Steiger, a name rightfully earned. Zum Steiger, a landmark on the old Dresden-Tharandt road, predates even the 1785 engineer’s map. The inn celebrated its centennial in 1901. A monument to Richard Wagner graces its grounds. Wagner, a participant in the 1849 uprising, found refuge at Zum Steiger. Fleeing through Plauenscher Grund, he borrowed breakfast from the innkeeper’s wife. Her son then guided him through the forest to Kesselsdorf, securing his escape. Years later, amnestied and famous, Wagner returned to Zum Steiger. He honored his debt, a testament to the inn’s role in his life. The Weißeritzstolln’s water once flowed freely into the Weißeritz River. Now covered, its presence is still felt. The water travels through a covered channel before joining the river. Zum Steiger remains, a testament to history and the flow of time.
