Did a Saxon craving for coffee really fuel a cultural revolution? Let’s talk about Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. This iconic Leipzig landmark stands as a testament to Germany’s enduring love affair with coffee. Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum isn’t just any coffee house. It holds the prestigious title of Germany’s oldest coffee house. Its name, “The Arabian Coffee Tree,” originates from the charming portal sculpture perched above its entrance on Kleine Fleischergasse 4.

Since 1711, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee has permeated these historic walls. Making Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum one of Europe’s oldest continuously operating coffee houses alongside the Café Procope in Paris. Imagine the conversations and creative sparks that flew within these walls! Robert Schumann, the renowned composer, and his Davidsbündler regularly gathered here from 1833. Their lively discussions and musical collaborations undoubtedly added to the rich tapestry of the cafe’s history. Other notable figures, like Johann Christoph Gottsched, also frequented Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. Adding to the cafe’s allure as a hub of intellectual and artistic exchange.

The building itself is an architectural marvel. It boasts a four-story facade with seven window axes. These windows are adorned with Renaissance surrounds. Atop the saddle roof sits a dwarf house with a triangular gable. This is flanked by two dormers with arched roofs. The central axis showcases baroque ornamentation. Including decorative window coverings and, of course, the iconic sculpture that gives the cafe its name. The portal relief depicts an Oriental figure offering a cup of coffee to a putto. A blossoming coffee tree seemingly bursts through the roof above. A testament to coffee’s journey from the Orient to the Occident. The inscription “Johan Lehmann | 1719” commemorates the cafe’s founder.

Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum has undergone extensive renovations since 2019. With the aim of preserving its historical charm while adapting to modern needs. The museum, showcasing Saxon and Leipzig coffee house culture, is being redesigned and remodeled. The cafe itself, steeped in history and frequented by famous artists, will also reopen. Offering visitors a chance to experience the ambiance of centuries past. The grand reopening is slated for July 1, 2025. Allowing a new generation to experience the magic of Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum. So, while we can’t step inside today, remember the stories within these walls. Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum stands as a symbol of Leipzig’s rich cultural heritage. A place where the love of coffee has intertwined with history, art, and intellectual discourse for over three centuries.
