How long has St Peter und Paul stood in Leipzig? Not as long as some might think. The church we see today is a relative newcomer. It replaced an older building. That older church was consecrated in 1507. It served as a Lutheran church for years. It was later repurposed as storage. During the Thirty Years’ War it even served as a barracks. Imagine soldiers marching through its hallowed halls. In 1704 plans were made to restore it for religious use. This restoration included a new sacristy and additional floors. The first service was held again in 1712. Over the years it received a new altar. A new organ was installed between 1797 and 1799. A bell tower was added in 1874. Even this impressive edifice was eventually deemed too small for its growing congregation.
St Peter und Paul in Leipzig is the church you see before you. In 1876 a decision was made to build a new church. The old building was traded for a plot of land at the Schlettenplatz. A design competition took place in 1877. Designs by August Hartel and Constantin Lipsius were chosen. The construction began in 1882. The foundation stone was laid on September 17th of that year. This impressive structure wasn’t completed overnight. The dedication ceremony for St Peter und Paul in Leipzig finally happened in December 1885. The interior painting and the stained glass windows weren’t completed until the following year.
The new St Peter und Paul isn’t merely a building it’s a testament to faith and resilience. Its history is intertwined with Leipzig itself. The church’s impressive Gothic Revival architecture isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It is richly decorated. Notice the stained glass windows and the grand portal. Sadly it wasn’t untouched by war. During World War II the church suffered damage. The roof was largely destroyed. The restoration took many years. Repair work took place in the 1970s 1990s and 2000s.
Despite the challenges St Peter und Paul stands tall. It is Leipzig’s tallest church. At 87 meters or 285 feet its tower dominates the skyline. Its height is not just a physical feature. It reflects the enduring spirit of the Leipzig community. It stands as a symbol of faith hope and perseverance. It whispers stories of generations of worship and resilience. It’s a landmark in this wonderful city of Leipzig. St Peter und Paul stands as a beautiful reminder of faith’s enduring power.
