Zschölkau’s origins lie in a linear village structure a Gassendorf. Imagine the villagers their lives unfolding along this single long street. Before 1815 it was part of the Kursächsischen Amt Delitzsch a district of the Electorate of Saxony. The Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna changed everything. Zschölkau then became Prussian. It was assigned to the Delitzsch district in the Merseburg government region of the Province of Saxony a complex administrative shift.
In 1950 Hohenossig a neighboring settlement joined Zschölkau. This merger shaped the village’s future. The post-war reorganization of East Germany further altered its boundaries. Zschölkau with Hohenossig became part of the newly defined Delitzsch district within the Leipzig Bezirk. In 1994 this district transitioned into the Delitzsch county. For a short time from 1994 to 1998 Zschölkau and Kletzen formed their own independent community. Finally in 1999 Zschölkau became a part of the Krostitz municipality.
The population of Zschölkau has fluctuated over time. In 1818 just over 150 people called it home. By 1939 this number almost doubled to 287. After the Second World War the population rose sharply reaching 485 in 1946 and 875 four years later. The post-war population boom was significant. The population of Zschölkau did decrease considerably during the later years of the GDR era though. In 1990 only 536 people lived in Zschölkau. The village’s story is one of continuous adaptation and change a reflection of larger historical forces.
