Who was Zrínyi Miklós, and why does a Budapest secondary school bear his name? Here at the Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium, that question hangs in the air, mingling with the echoes of students past and present. This school, nestled in Kőbánya, Budapest’s 10th district, has been shaping young minds since 1986. But its story began earlier, in 1978, when the building itself was completed. It wasn’t until 1986 that Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium took up residence, becoming an independent institution under the leadership of its first director, Ambrus György. Before that, from 1984 to 1986, it housed the Szent László Gimnázium. The Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium quickly found its footing. By 1988, it was expanding its curriculum with specialized programs in computer science, humanities, public security, and tourism. The school also distinguished itself by becoming one of the few not under local municipality control, achieving financial independence in 1993. This era saw Nahalkáné Czédulá Margit take the helm, guiding the school for a decade and building its reputation. Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium further evolved in 1999, adding post-secondary vocational training in computer software operation and tourism. The school continued adapting, launching a preparatory English language program in 2004 designed to equip students for advanced-level graduation exams. Today, the Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium thrives with approximately 530 students across 17 classes. Its dedicated staff of 43 teachers ensures a 100% specialist coverage across its diverse specializations, which now include general and communication studies and a Homeland Defence Cadet program. While the school has seen much change, its core values remain. The focus on a student-centered, humane, and democratic learning environment persists. This commitment to nurturing young minds continues to define the spirit of the Zrínyi Miklós Gimnázium.
