In the heart of Óbuda, the Kátránytornyok, or Tar Towers, stand as silent witnesses to Budapest’s industrial past. These imposing structures, once part of the Óbudai Gázgyár (Óbuda Gas Works), resemble a medieval fortress. They evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity. The Kátránytornyok, with their distinctive tower, are instantly recognizable. They dominate the landscape. Let’s journey back to the early 20th century, when Budapest’s burgeoning population demanded more gas. In 1908, the city decided to build a new gas works in Óbuda. Construction began in 1910, and production started in 1913. The gas works wasn’t just a place of industry. It was also a community. A housing estate, designed by Almási Balogh Lóránd, a prominent figure in Hungarian Art Nouveau, was built alongside the gas works. This estate housed the workers and their families. A separate, more luxurious villa colony accommodated the gas works’ managers and officials. The Kátránytornyok were essential to the gas production process. They stored the tar, a byproduct of gas production. The towers’ design, reminiscent of medieval fortifications, added a touch of the fantastical to this industrial landscape. The gas works operated until 1984. For the next 20 years, administrative tasks were still performed there by the Budapest Gas Works employees. Finally, in 2004, the site was handed over to the city. The industrial buildings, including the Kátránytornyok, were declared protected monuments. The area has since undergone a transformation. Graphisoft, a software company, established its park here in 1998. A modern housing estate was also built. However, the old housing estates, both the workers’ estate and the villa colony, remain. They serve as a reminder of the gas works’ heyday. Today, the Kátránytornyok and the surrounding area can only be visited on guided tours. The iconic water tower and the two tar towers were renovated a few years ago. The other buildings, however, stand empty, awaiting their fate. The soil contamination from the gas works’ operation poses a challenge for redevelopment. A complete soil replacement is needed before anything new can be built. Stepping inside the Kátránytornyok feels like entering a vast cathedral. The acoustics are incredible. The sound of a dropped golf ball reverberates through the space. Climbing the 225 steps to the top of the water tower offers breathtaking panoramic views. The foundations of two enormous gas tanks are still visible, reminders of the site’s industrial past. The future of the remaining buildings is uncertain, but their unique history and architectural significance are undeniable.
