Beneath the gaze of Zózimo Barrozo do Amaral, a story unfolds. The Zózimo Barrozo do Amaral Statue stands here at Posto 12 in Leblon. It captures the spirit of this Carioca journalist. Zózimo, as he was known, observes the beach he loved. The bronze statue, sculpted by Roberto Sá, was inaugurated in November 2001. It depicts Zózimo at 40, contemplating the ocean with his artist’s palette resting on his shoulder.

The statue isn’t just Zózimo. It’s a snapshot of his life. It includes elements like a section of the Leblon wall, a typewriter, a notebook, and a page from the Jornal do Brasil. This was the newspaper where his insightful column graced the pages for many years. Zózimo’s career began in 1959 at O Globo. He later moved to Jornal do Brasil in 1964. There his humor and sharp commentary on high society, politics, and economics earned him both acclaim and trouble. His willingness to delve into political backrooms led to his imprisonment during the military dictatorship. He also oversaw the “Caderno B” section and the “Informe JB.” In 1993, he returned to O Globo, where he continued his column until his death from lung cancer in 1997.

The statue itself has faced its own battles. The sea air corroded one of its feet. Vandals stole part of the bronze column and a page from the newspaper. The city restored the statue in 2023. They repaired the foot, recast the stolen pieces, and even added internal iron bars for extra security. They also replaced the plaque that reads, “Carioca, journalist and Flamengo fan,” a testament to Zózimo’s deep Rio roots. So, as you stand before the Zózimo Barrozo do Amaral Statue, you’re not just seeing bronze. You’re seeing a life lived fully, a tribute to a man who captured the heart of Rio, and a reminder of the enduring power of words.
