Remember those thrilling childhood rides? The Zoo de Luján offered a different kind of thrill. A unique experience unlike any other zoo.
The Zoo de Luján opened its gates on November 24 1994. It wasn’t your typical zoo. Located in Luján Buenos Aires it initially housed a modest collection of animals. A monkey two donkeys two ponies some llamas and deer. A lion pair and peacocks were also present. This was just the beginning.
Over time the zoo expanded its collection. It boasted over 50 lions 20 Bengal tigers and 12 pumas. Around fifty South American monkeys of various species lived there. Dromedaries reproduced within the zoo. Elephants from Sumatra even called the Zoo de Luján home.
However the Zoo de Luján wasn’t without controversy. Animal welfare organizations raised concerns. Animals were allegedly sedated. Their enclosures were often too small. Investigations were launched. The zoo was accused of illegal activities. These included violations of Law No. 12238 which prohibited direct feeding or contact with animals. The animals were supposedly doped to enhance tourist appeal. This was considered animal abuse. Several animals died prematurely.
In 2019 the Senasa closed the lion and tiger cages. Visitors were previously allowed to interact with the animals. This was because the animals were constantly sedated. The British newspaper The Sun highlighted these accusations of animal cruelty. The Ombudsman’s Office of the Province of Buenos Aires even requested the zoo’s closure.
Finally on September 9 2020 the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development ordered the Zoo de Luján’s closure. It was permanently shut down on September 14 2020. The reasons were lack of national and provincial permits repeated breaches of wildlife regulations. There were also reports of inadequate veterinary care and insufficient animal nutrition.
The Zoo de Luján. Its legacy is complex. A place of both wonder and controversy. It reminds us of the delicate balance between entertainment and animal welfare. A balance that was not always achieved within its walls.
