“Football and solar power? What a combo!” Right here we are at the Placa Solar ”Fundación Club A. Huracán”. It’s a tribute to the Huracán Athletic Club Foundation. But there is more than meets the eye.
The Club Atlético Huracán is an Argentine sports club. It hails from Buenos Aires’ Parque Patricios neighborhood. The club was founded November 1 1908. It was in the Nueva Pompeya neighborhood. They are known as Globo or the Burners.
The Placa Solar ”Fundación Club A. Huracán” commemorates the club’s work. In October 2021, the Programa Educación en Ciencia y Tecnología constructed a solar water heater. They used recycled materials. It was a collective effort. Students and extension workers from UNC participated. Members of the Huracán commission were also involved. The specialists shared knowledge. They showed how to use solar energy to heat water.
The club’s history is rich. Back on May 25 1903 a group of boys from Nueva Pompeya founded a football club. It was first called Los Chiquitos de Pompeya. In 1907, they changed the name to Verde esperanza y no pierde. José Laguna signed the club’s certificates as first president. The white color with a balloon emblem became the club’s jersey.
Jorge Newbery gave the club permission to use his balloon image. The balloon had crossed Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. Newbery was named a protector member of the club in 1910.
Huracán reached Argentina’s Primera División in 1914. They won their first title in 1920. It was the Copa Estímulo. The first league title came a year later. Huracán were crowned champions. They had 14 victories and only one loss.
Huracán has a deep connection to its community. The solar water heater project shows this. The Placa Solar ”Fundación Club A. Huracán” represents innovation and sustainability. It also embodies community involvement. It is a testament to the club’s enduring spirit.
