Eavesdrop on any conversation near the Weser River, and you’re bound to hear whispers of the Zoo am Meer. Here at Zoo am Meer, the air crackles with the cries of seabirds and the playful barks of seals. Zoo am Meer, officially “Zoo by the Sea”, isn’t just a zoo. It’s a portal to the north, a haven for creatures adapted to icy winds and frigid waters. Originally, this spot housed the North Sea Aquarium, established in 1912. Later, in 1928, it expanded to become the Tiergrotten, or “Animal Grotto.” The Zoo am Meer we see today emerged after a major renovation, reopening in 2004. The zoo’s layout emphasizes naturalistic landscapes. This provides an immersive experience, transporting visitors to the animals’ native habitats. Imagine standing nose-to-glass with a polar bear, separated only by a pane from a creature that calls the Arctic home. Zoo am Meer’s polar bear enclosure is famous. It once housed Irka, a polar bear who arrived from Canada in 1979 and lived a full life at the zoo. Sadly, Irka was euthanized in 2012 due to health complications. Her legacy lives on in the stories shared within the zoo’s walls. Another resident, Victoria, arrived from Tierpark Hagenbeck in 2008 with hopes of breeding. She stayed until 2011. Now, Valeska, an eight-year-old from Finland, shares the enclosure. Zoo am Meer is also known for its colony of Humboldt penguins. This colony gained notoriety for having a homosexual penguin couple, a testament to the diverse relationships that exist in the animal kingdom. Beyond the penguins and polar bears, Zoo am Meer showcases a variety of other northern and aquatic species. South American sea lions bask in the sun, their barks echoing across the grounds. Harbor seals and South African fur seals frolic in their pools, captivating visitors with their playful antics. Even a Fischer’s chameleon, suspected to have been an escaped pet, found a home in the woods nearby. Zoo am Meer is more than just a collection of animals. It’s a testament to survival, having endured the devastating North Sea flood of 1962. It’s also a symbol of adaptation and renewal, as seen in the story of Irka and the ongoing renovations. The planned aquarium beneath the polar bear compound promises even more immersive experiences. This is a place where the whispers of the north wind meet the salty tang of the sea, a place called Zoo am Meer.
