One of the most iconic landmarks within Zona Oeste is the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Gloria do Outeiro. Perched atop a hill, this church has witnessed centuries of Rio’s history unfold. Originally known as Morro do Leripe or Uruçumirim, the hill offered stunning views of the sea. It was here, in 1567, that the Portuguese, led by Estácio de Sá, claimed victory over the French and their Tamoio allies. This battle marked a pivotal moment in Rio’s history, solidifying Portuguese control. Tragically, Estácio de Sá was mortally wounded during this conflict, forever linking this hill to the city’s founder.

The church itself is a masterpiece of 18th-century architecture. Its unique design features two interconnected octagons, preceded by a square bell tower. Construction began around 1714, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel José Cardoso de Ramalho. The church was completed in 1739. Inside, the ornate woodwork and painted tiles tell stories of faith and artistry. The tiles, attributed to Mestre Valentim de Almeida, depict scenes from the Book of Tobit. These tiles are considered among the most important in Brazil.

The Igreja Nossa Senhora da Gloria do Outeiro played a significant role in the lives of the Portuguese royal family. It became a favored place of worship for King João VI and his family. In 1819, Princess Maria da Glória, the future Queen Maria II of Portugal, was baptized here. This tradition continued, with subsequent royal family members, including Dom Pedro II and Princess Isabel, receiving baptism within these hallowed walls. Even today, descendants of the Bragança family continue this tradition, maintaining a link to Rio’s royal past. Zona Oeste, with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, continues to captivate and inspire. It invites you to explore its vibrant neighborhoods, discover its hidden gems, and experience the true spirit of Rio de Janeiro.
