Trümmer erzählen Geschichten. Here at the Zionskirche, these stories are etched into the very bricks that form its walls. The Zionskirche is more than just a church. It is a symbol of resilience and rebirth for Kassel.

Let’s delve into the story of the Zionskirche. Its origins trace back to 1778. That was the year the Kolonie Philippinenhof was founded just outside Kassel. Initially, the residents attended the Freiheiter Gemeinde. But as the community grew, they desired their own place of worship. In 1895, they built a small chapel. They named it Zionskirche after Mount Zion in Jerusalem. This original Zionskirche stood where the Kita Philippinenhof is today.

By 1930, the village had transformed into a suburban neighborhood. The chapel was expanded to accommodate the growing congregation. However, tragedy struck in 1944. The church was completely destroyed during the war.

The year is 1949. Standing here, you would have witnessed the raising of a new Zionskirche. It was built at the foot of the Hegelsberg. This new Zionskirche held special significance. It was the first church built in Kassel after the war. It was one of the “Notkirchen” designed by Professor Bartning.

Look closely at the altar area. The bricks you see are not new. They are salvaged from the rubble of bombed-out parish houses on Holländische Strasse. The fire-scorched wood in the roof structure was a gift. The World Council of Churches donated it. Both the bricks and the wood serve as constant reminders. They remind us of the horrors of war. They call for peace and reconciliation.

Step inside the Zionskirche. Notice the unique atmosphere. Some say it feels like being inside an overturned ship’s hull. The Zionskirche has seating for about 320 people. The space can be expanded by opening up the adjoining community hall. This adds another 100 seats.

The Zionskirche embodies simplicity. A large, plain wooden cross complements the unadorned architecture. This reflects the church’s mission. It is to be a welcoming space for “free and sincere people”.

The Zionskirche stands as a testament to faith. It embodies community spirit. It is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. It is waiting to share its unique story with you. Take a moment to reflect on the past. Consider the message of hope and renewal.
