Gazing upwards at the Linearuhr, have you ever wondered how such a simple display can capture the essence of time? Here at the top of Kassel’s Wilhelmsstraße, at Ständeplatz, stands the Linearuhr. It’s more than just a clock; it’s a light kinetic sculpture, a brainchild of Peter Hertha dating back to 1977. The Linearuhr isn’t housed in a traditional clock tower. Instead, it’s displayed between three sleek stainless steel pillars. Three identical vertical rows of light bulbs, nestled under a plexiglass covering, are arranged 120 degrees apart. These aren’t just any bulbs. They dance in an electronically controlled interplay of light, a unique way to tell time. This isn’t some new-fangled digital display. The Linearuhr uses the 50Hz power frequency as its timekeeper. It also receives radio signals from the DCF77 time transmitter in Mainflingen, ensuring its accuracy. Each vertical row of lights on the Linearuhr is divided into three segments. The top segment represents hours, the middle shows minutes, and the bottom counts the seconds. Each segment contains two rows of lights, one above the other, which must be read separately. To tell the time, simply count the illuminated bulbs in the six rows. Arrange these numbers like a digital clock. At noon, for instance, only three bulbs shine in the top segment. The first bulb of the upper row signifies the “12” for the hour, and the first two bulbs of the lower row also signify the “12”. This unique light display creates a captivating spectacle, a visual representation of time’s steady march. The Linearuhr in Kassel underwent a significant restoration in 2019. It was modernized and even received a new location nearby. Shielded from delivery traffic, its LEDs continue to mesmerize onlookers, showcasing not just the time but the very flow of time itself.
