“Did you know that Zion Lutheran Church in San Francisco wasn’t always here?” I ask my tour group. We stand before the church building its presence both comforting and imposing.

This wasn’t the original Zion Lutheran Church. The story of Zion is interwoven with the history of St Paulus Evangelical Lutheran Church. Founded in 1860 by Reverend J M Buehler St Paulus was the first Lutheran congregation in San Francisco. It served a primarily German-speaking community. The church grew quickly. It moved from a vacant building on Greenwich Street to Congress Hall then Dashaway Hall before purchasing a Presbyterian church on Mission Street.

This Mission Street location became a significant landmark for the Lutheran Church on the Pacific Coast. Many future pastors were ordained there. In 1879 an assistant pastor helped establish Zion Lutheran Church in Oakland. But our Zion Lutheran Church in San Francisco has a different origin story.

St Paulus Church continued to grow and flourish. It survived the 1906 earthquake and fire miraculously. In gratitude it served as an emergency hospital. Thousands received treatment within its walls. The church however never fully recovered its pre-fire membership numbers. Many members moved. That led to the founding of a new church.

Zion Lutheran Church in San Francisco was organized in 1903. It drew many members from St Paulus. It’s a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of its founders. The church’s location in the Richmond district reflects the westward expansion of the city and its people.

It’s a story of growth division and rebirth. It shows the enduring power of faith to overcome hardship and build community. St Paulus and Zion though separate are deeply connected sharing a common ancestry. Their stories are an important part of San Francisco’s rich and layered history. This church stands as a symbol of that history. It reminds us that faith can endure through both triumphs and tragedies. So take a moment look around you let the history of Zion Lutheran Church sink in.
