Hidden within the bustling cityscape of Chicago, Zion Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The church, originally known as “The First German Evangelical Lutheran Zions Church of Washington Heights, Cook County, Illinois, U.A.C.”, has a rich history intertwined with the growth of the city itself. Zion Lutheran Church wasn’t founded by Lutheran pioneers, unlike most other Lutheran congregations. Before 1870, the congregation, then part of the Evangelical Church, worshipped in a building in what is now Washington Heights. Internal disputes within the Evangelical Church, coupled with their pastor being exposed as a fraud, led the 18 families of Zion to seek a new spiritual home. They found it within the Lutheran faith, joining the Missouri Synod and adopting a Lutheran constitution in 1870. The church’s early days were humble. Imagine a small cabin with a hitching post and simple wooden planks for walkways, lacking modern amenities like plumbing, heating, or electricity. This was Zion’s first home, a far cry from the stone structure that stands today. In 1878, the seeds of education were sown when two members assessed the need for a school. A year later, a school building was erected, welcoming 30 children. The church continued to evolve, navigating theological controversies and even weathering a split within the congregation in 1881. The resilient spirit of members like Andreas Christian Landeck helped hold the community together during these trying times. When Washington Heights became part of Chicago in 1890, Zion Lutheran Church also became a part of the city’s fabric. The congregation grew, necessitating a new frame church building in 1891. That same year, the first English sermon was delivered, marking a shift in the church’s demographics. A bell, originally intended for a three-bell ensemble but deemed slightly off-pitch, found its home at Zion in 1894. The church continued to expand throughout the 20th century, adding a basement assembly hall, electric lighting, and even bowling alleys in the school building. The current Lehigh stone church building, erected in 1937, replaced the older frame structure, marking a significant milestone in Zion’s history. The school continued to thrive, expanding with additional classrooms and even a kindergarten and library. By 1960, membership peaked at nearly 1,000 communicants. Even after the school closed in 1978, the building continued to serve the community, housing the Covenant Christian Academy. Zion Lutheran Church, now over 135 years old, continues to serve as a beacon of faith in the heart of Chicago.
