Do you know why the Glenview Bear Sculpture is a symbol of the community? It all began in 1917, and it’s a tale that’s full of charm. The Glenview Bear sits proud in Jackman Park today but it wasn’t always there. The Bear made its debut as part of the Children’s Fountain at a special event where all of Glenview, as it was then named, turned out for the dedication. It was a grand event with music from the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and a special speech by Edwin Jackman, the man who gifted the fountain to the town. It stood on the southeast corner of Glenview Road and Pine Street where there’s an apartment and retail complex now. Imagine a little bit of history right underfoot! The Bear has been a symbol of the village ever since, and the motto, “Hug the Bear,” reminds residents to be good neighbours and care about the community. Think of the Bear as a reminder that Glenview is truly a special place.
