The original nine attendees, led by the Reverend Charlie Hall Stimage, gathered at 3636 South Cottage Grove Avenue, laying the foundation for a vibrant community of faith. Reverend Stimage, a man of remarkable spirit, led the congregation for almost four decades. He was a World War II veteran, a Ford Motor Company employee, and a gifted gospel singer who even founded the Southern Jubilees quartet. The church’s name, “Zion,” signifies a holy place, often used to refer to the “heavenly city.” This choice reflects the aspirations of its founders and the deep faith that binds its community.
