Established in 1919 Zion Baptist Church stands proudly. It’s a beacon in the Lake Como community of Fort Worth Texas. This isn’t just any church. It’s a historical landmark designated by the State of Texas Historical Commission and the City of Fort Worth.
Zion Baptist Church began its journey in the chapel of the old I&M College. Elijah White Ida White Eugene Baker Elizabeth Lewis and others were among its early founders. They gathered in a small space a testament to their faith. Early pastors like Rev Frank Ford and Rev Craft served short terms. Financial constraints led to services being held in Eugene Baker’s home.
Eventually land was purchased at Blackmore and Horne Streets. A small church building was erected. Rev George W Burton’s leadership was pivotal. Under his guidance a new building was constructed on the current site at Horne and Libbey Streets. In 1951 the present structure was completed. Sara Mabry generously donated the original church bells. Rev Burton served for 42 years a remarkable testament to his dedication.
Rev J W Briscoe Sr continued the legacy. He led the church through significant spiritual and financial growth. The sanctuary underwent a complete renovation in 1982. The G W Burton Fellowship Hall and an education wing were added. The church also started the Zion Baptist Church Ruth Roberts Scholarship.
Rev Maurice E Barnes served as interim pastor before becoming the official pastor in 1994. He further strengthened Zion’s role in the Lake Como community. Zion Baptist Church remains an anchor a place of worship community service and historical significance. It is a living testament to faith perseverance and community spirit. It continues to serve as a cornerstone of the Lake Como community. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living embodiment of faith hope and love.
