Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Chicago’s West Englewood neighborhood, stands the Zion Baptist Church, a beacon of faith and resilience. Zion Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Its story begins on July 8, 1945, with a small group of just sixteen believers, led by the Reverend L.W. White. They laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of faith and community. The church’s very name, suggested by Mother Lula Hawkins, evokes a sense of peace and spiritual homecoming. Initially, the congregation worshipped at 3160 S. Cottage Grove. From its humble beginnings, Zion Baptist Church fostered a vibrant spiritual life. The Mothers Board, Sunday School, Ushers Board, Gospel Chorus, and BYPU Department all sprung forth, nurturing the congregation’s growth and connection. Financial challenges were met head-on. In 1945, the church opened its first bank account, marking a significant step towards stability. The following year, they celebrated Rev. White’s first anniversary as pastor. However, their journey wasn’t without its trials. In 1947, they found themselves without a permanent home, holding services wherever they could. Their resilience shone through as they worshipped at 37th & State Street and 4653 S. Wentworth. Eventually, they found a house at 2830 South Cottage Grove, transforming it into their sanctuary. The church faced financial burdens, including back taxes dating back to 1932, but the congregation persevered, renovating the building and establishing a true home. Change came in 1948 when Rev. White moved to Missouri. The church then called upon Reverend Marshall J. Richards. He accepted, merging his own Highway M.B. Church with Zion Baptist Church, bringing with him 125 new members and a renewed sense of purpose. Under Rev. Richards, the church thrived, necessitating a move to a larger building at 6201 South Morgan in 1954. Continued growth led them to their current location at 1406 W. 64th St. in 1965. The church continued to flourish under the leadership of Rev. Vernon B. Harris, who took the helm in 1970. He oversaw significant growth, the development of numerous ministries, and community outreach programs. The church’s influence extended beyond its walls. In 1996, a section of Loomis Boulevard was renamed Rev. Vernon B. Harris Drive, a testament to his impact. Today, Zion Baptist Church continues to serve as a spiritual haven, its history woven into the fabric of Chicago’s West Englewood. It stands as a symbol of faith, perseverance, and the power of community.
