The Zincirlikuyu Cami also known as the Vasat Atik Ali Pasha Mosque or Karagümrük Mosque is a significant landmark in Istanbul’s Fatih district. It sits on Fevzipaşa Street.
Its construction began in 1502. Hadım Atik Ali Pasha Sultan Bayezid II’s grand vizier commissioned it. The mosque was completed in 1512 a year after the grand vizier’s death. The Zincirlikuyu Cami is special. It’s one of only two mosques in Istanbul with six domes the other being the Piyale Pasha Mosque. Its name Zincirlikuyu Mosque comes from its proximity to a well known as Zincirlikuyu meaning chained well.
The mosque’s minaret faced a devastating event. An earthquake in June 1648 caused its collapse. Thankfully restoration efforts began in 2013. This extensive project costing 2.2 million Turkish lira approximately 1.03 million US dollars at the time was completed in 2014.
