Slipping through time, let’s journey back to 1722. Imagine Istanbul’s Üsküdar district, a place where the Bosphorus whispers secrets to the hills. Here, amidst the bustling Gündoğumu Caddesi and Esvapçı Sokak, a new landmark began to rise: the Ahmet Dede Camii, also known as the Kefçe Dede Camii. Commissioned by Şenbül Emin Ahmet Ağa, the Tersane Emini, or superintendent of the shipyard, Ahmet Dede Camii was a testament to his devotion. The mosque’s square form, built from rubble masonry and limestone, covered nearly 250 square meters. Its cut-stone minaret stood proudly beside the main structure, a beacon calling the faithful to prayer. Ahmet Dede Camii wasn’t immune to the passage of time. Records show renovations in 1861 and 1885, breathing new life into the aging structure. Another restoration took place in 1965. This included a controversial decision. The existing son cemaat yeri, a covered area for latecomers to prayer, was demolished and rebuilt. The new son cemaat yeri incorporates a mihrab, a niche indicating the direction of Mecca. Ahmet Dede Camii’s design is truly remarkable. Its dome rests on segmented trompes, architectural supports that transition from a square base to a circular or octagonal dome. Each side of the octagonal dome frame boasts a window, bathing the interior in natural light. The mihrab and minbar, the pulpit, are simple yet elegant. The small, marble minbar, while modest in size, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of its time. Fifteen windows, seven below and eight above, illuminate the prayer hall. Originally conceived as a standalone mosque, Ahmet Dede Camii’s complex expanded over time. A cemetery, imaret (public kitchen), muvakkithane (timekeeping room), çeşme (fountain), sıbyan mektebi (primary school), medrese (religious school), library, and sebil (public fountain) were added, creating a thriving community hub. Sadly, only the mosque remains today. The area where Ahmet Dede Camii stands was once known as Kefçe Dede Mahallesi, until administrative changes in 2008. The mosque’s founder, Şenbül Emin Ahmet Ağa, rests in the cemetery, his legacy etched in stone. Nearby lies the tomb of Kefçe Dede, who built the first small mosque on the site, a precursor to the grand Ahmet Dede Camii. This tomb, a six-sided structure topped with a dome, adds another layer of history to this sacred ground. The cemetery itself, situated to the north and west of the mosque, is divided into two sections, a silent testament to the lives lived and prayers offered within the shadow of Ahmet Dede Camii.
