Did that majestic creature swimming off the coast just surface? No, it’s the Zifio Común – Senda de los Cetáceos Statue! This striking sculpture isn’t just any statue. It represents a fascinating story of conservation and respect for Fuerteventura’s marine life. This Zifio Común, or Cuvier’s beaked whale, is part of the Senda de los Cetáceos, a project by the Fuerteventura council. Tragically, this specific whale was part of an atypical mass stranding in July 2004. Sadly, three Cuvier’s beaked whales, two in Fuerteventura and one in Lanzarote, beached within a short period. This event coincided with naval military maneuvers, leading to a possible link between the two.

The recovered skeleton underwent a fascinating journey. First, it was unearthed at the Zurita Environmental Complex, where meticulous cleaning, degreasing, bleaching, and restoration took place. Each bone was carefully photographed, weighed, and measured, creating a detailed record of this magnificent creature. Then, at the La Oliva Biological Station, skilled hands articulated the skeleton using stainless steel. This process ensured its preservation and allowed for its display. Finally, on September 22nd, 2015, the Zifio Común – Senda de los Cetáceos Statue found its home here in El Cotillo. It stands as a testament to the island’s dedication to showcasing the incredible diversity of cetacean species found in the waters surrounding Fuerteventura.
