Across the street from Gülhane Park stands the Zeynep Sultan Mosque. A beautiful structure it is. Built in 1769 it was commissioned by Sultan Ahmed III’s daughter Zeynep Sultan. Architect Mehmet Tahir Ağa designed it. He was also the architect of the Ayazma Mosque.

The Zeynep Sultan Mosque isn’t just a mosque. It’s a historical landmark. Its architectural style evokes Byzantine churches. This is due to the materials used in its construction and its style. Think of it as a bridge between architectural eras. A subtle blend of old and new.

Notice the dome. It’s 12.2 meters in diameter. The interior was originally ornamented with crayons. That’s a rather unusual detail isn’t it? Imagine the vibrant colors adorning the walls. A testament to the artistry of the time.

Behind the Zeynep Sultan Mosque is a building. It once served as a mektep a kind of primary school. It still serves as a primary school today. It is a continuous flow of education within this very historic place.

The fountain in front of the mosque isn’t original. It was moved there. Originally part of Abdul-Hamid I’s külliye it was relocated in the 1920s. Relocated due to the construction of the 4th Vakıf Han in Eminönü. A fascinating relocation story this is.

More intriguing secrets are held within the mosque’s hazire. This is the cemetery. Here lies Alemdar Mustafa Pasha. He was an Ottoman military hero. His grave is found here. Zeynep Sultan’s corpse was once stored in the cellar. It is awaiting a new tomb. The grave of her second husband Melek Mehmet Pasha is also here. Melek Mehmet Pasha was Selim III’s Grand Vizier. Quite a family history. From her first marriage she had a son Mahmud Dramali Pasha.

The Zeynep Sultan Mosque isn’t simply a place of worship. It’s a living testament to Istanbul’s rich history. It’s a story woven into the very stones of the building itself. It is a true gem. Come take a moment to appreciate its beauty and the stories it holds.
