This magnificent building, constructed between 1911 and 1912, was the brainchild of Felix Reimann, a fur trader with a vision. He saw the rise of Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s airships and wanted to honor the man and the era. The Zeppelinhaus isn’t just named after Count Zeppelin. Look up. See the portrait medallion? That’s the Count himself, immortalized in stone by Leipzig sculptor Hans Zeissig. The building echoes the grandeur of the era, a blend of Art Nouveau and Reform styles. Designed by architect Gustav Pflaume, the Zeppelinhaus boasts a four-winged design surrounding a glass-covered courtyard. Imagine bustling fur traders hurrying through its doors, their arms laden with luxurious pelts. In 1914, the Zeppelinhaus housed nineteen fur-related businesses, a hub of Leipzig’s thriving fur trade. The Nikolaistraße location placed it near both the iconic Nikolaikirche and the bustling Hauptbahnhof, the main train station. The Zeppelinhaus survived the damage of World War II. It has been meticulously restored, its limestone facade and ornate details gleaming once more. Today, it continues to play a vital role in Leipzig. Since March 2019, the Zeppelinhaus has housed the Institute for Communication and Media Studies at Leipzig University, carrying its legacy into the future.
