Ever wondered what it’s like inside a psychiatric center with a history stretching back over a century? Today, we’re standing before the Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau. It is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Konstanz.

Founded in 1913, the Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau started as the Badische Heil- und Pflegeanstalt near Konstanz. It was intended to house up to 910 patients. Early on, it combined psychotherapy and social psychiatry in its approach. Influential psychiatrists like Eugen Bleuler and Ludwig Binswanger frequented the facility. They engaged in stimulating discussions.

However, the winds of change brought dark times. In 1933, Maximilian Thumm was removed from his position for political reasons. He had championed work therapy and early discharge. The center’s focus shifted to control and eugenics. This was a dark chapter. Tragically, in 1941, the clinic was shut down. 508 patients were murdered as part of the “Euthanasie” program.

From 1941 to 1945, a National Political Education Institute occupied the grounds. After World War II, French forces used the buildings as a military hospital. Refugees also found shelter here.

In 1949, the site officially reopened as a psychiatric hospital. It took time to regain its pre-war standards. Overcrowding and underqualified staff posed challenges.

The late 1960s brought improvements. Professor Siedow and Dr. Faulstich initiated structural and qualitative changes. The Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau became active in social psychiatry again. Contacts with Swiss experts were revived. The University of Konstanz established a special station. It was initially for women with addiction. Later, it expanded to include schizophrenic patients.

The 1970s and 80s saw the creation of specialized stations. Depression, psychotherapy and schizophrenia became focal points. In the 1990s, general psychiatric admission stations were reformed. They introduced mixed-gender care and regionalization. Psychotherapeutic elements were integrated.

In 1996, the Psychiatrische Landeskrankenhaus Reichenau became the Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau. It is a public institution. It emphasizes community-based psychiatric care.

Since 2000, the Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau has been an academic teaching hospital. It actively participates in regional networks for mental health and addiction support. The center provides various services. These include outpatient, partial inpatient, and full inpatient care.

The Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau strives to improve patient care. It focuses on community-based psychiatry. In recent years, it has established several treatment centers. These include the Tagesklinik Bad Säckingen and the Tagesklinik Singen.

The facility has faced a difficult past. Today, a memorial stands before Haus 20. It commemorates the patients murdered during the Nazi era. The inscription urges us to protect human life. The memorial serves as a constant reminder.

Today, the Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau includes psychiatric outpatient clinics. It also has residential and nursing homes. Furthermore, it offers a rehabilitation center and a forensic clinic. The hospital provides care for the districts of Konstanz, Tuttlingen and Waldshut. It is part of the ZfP group of Baden-Württemberg.

As we stand here, we see a modern psychiatric center. It has evolved from its complex history. The Zentrum für Psychiatrie Reichenau is dedicated to providing comprehensive mental health care.
