Hidden amidst Konstanz’s charming old town stands the Christuskirche. Its Baroque elegance whispers tales of centuries past. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living testament to Konstanz’s rich history.

Originally built between 1604 and 1607 the Christuskirche began as a Jesuit church. It was a time of great religious fervor. The Jesuits a powerful order established a college and a gymnasium alongside their impressive new church. Dedicated to Saint Konrad Bishop of Konstanz from 934 to 975 the church reflected the Jesuit’s ambition and influence.

Designed after Roman models the Christuskirche initially boasted a flat ceiling. However Jesuit Heinrich Mayer dramatically transformed the church in 1682. He added a stunning Baroque barrel vault intricately adorned with stucco work. This opulent addition reflects the Baroque era’s love of grandeur and ornamentation. The original vault unfortunately proved unstable. Engineers replaced it in 1929-1930 with a cleverly designed imitation. This clever fake vault hangs suspended from the roof structure using steel supports.

The church’s interior underwent further changes during the Rococo period. Between 1761 and 1763 new altars pews and other furnishings were added. This beautiful Rococo style is seen in the current altars and pulpit.

The Jesuits’ influence however was short-lived. The order was dissolved in 1773. The church then served as a gymnasium chapel. In 1904 the Old Catholic community of Konstanz took over its use. Today the building is owned by the state of Baden-Württemberg. The state is responsible for its upkeep. Extensive renovations took place between 2008 and 2014. These restorations ensured the Christuskirche’s survival for future generations.

Many of the church’s original features remain. These include a captivating statue of Mary and Child. The statue is the work of the renowned Dutch master Hans Morinck. Fifteen rosary paintings adorn the nave’s pillars. Each is uniquely painted on wood and bears the coat of arms of its donor.

The church’s choir showcases four portraits of Jesuit saints. These paintings probably date from around 1683. The current Rococo-style furnishings including the impressive high altar and pulpit add to the Christuskirche’s unique charm.

Carved into the pews are inscriptions from the time when schoolchildren used the church. These inscriptions a rare glimpse into Konstanz’s past survive even after numerous renovations. They offer a captivating look into the lives of families prominent in Konstanz’s history. The Christuskirche isn’t just a building. It’s a living chronicle of Konstanz. A place where history art and faith intertwine. A place well worth your time.
